The ancient Via Regina ran along the western shores of Lake Como. It connected Como, Samolaco and Chiavenna. From here it climbed up to the mountain passes of Spluga, Maloja and Julier linking the Po valley with Chur, Raetia and the central transalpine region, and from there to the Rhine and Danube. Via Regina is now the name given to the stretch of the ancient road that linked Como to the upper Lario as far as Sorico. Part of the ancient route can now be walked: it runs parallel to the current Strada Statale 340 merging with it in some stretches.
