The national competition for the new premises of the historic Como institution was held in 1961. The guidelines envisaged the use of the area of the ancient Palazzo Odescalchi, retaining only its late medieval part. A Neapolitan group won with a project that was functionally divided, with small rooms and archives in the existing building and the offices and the large reference room in the new part, characterized by a continuous full-height window on the first floor.
The library collection was formed in the 17th century and today contains more than 400,000 publications, including precious manuscripts.
