Darsena (dock) comes from the Arabic Dar-Sinaa “house of industry, factory”. An artificial basin used for docking and mooring boats. It is the sheltered, innermost part of the port. Lake Como is an important natural waterway for communications and the transport of goods. Along its shores the water is often led inside the basement levels of the houses lining it, giving rise to covered harbours. At Torno the ancient wharf on the beach was transformed into a harbour, becoming a trading centre in the first basin of Western Lario as well as the piazza of the village of Riva.
