Built in the late 1800s by the architects Angelo Savoldi and Giambattista Borsani for Luigi Erba, the villa became the centre of an intense cultural and social life. Subsequently, it was inherited by, among others, the film director Luchino Visconti, who made it his summer retreat. In 1987 the international trade fair and conference centre was built in the gardens to a project by the architect Mario Bellini. Its structure is organized as radial pavilions linked to a large central rotunda. Its glass envelope is inspired by greenhouses.
