Atlas Walled city

The walled city of Como is the quadrangular area within the walls that comprises the city’s historic pedestrian centre. Of the ancient walls today, three sides and three towers survive: piazza Cacciatori delle Alpi, viale Varese, torre Gattoni, viale Carlo Cattaneo, piazza Vittoria, torre di Porta Vittoria or Porta Torre, via Cesare Battisti, torre di San Vitale, viale Lecco, piazza Verdi. In 1158-59 the city began building the existing Frederician walls, twenty metres outside the Roman walls built by Julius Caesar (1st century BC).
