The monument is a flight of steps that goes up the hill leading to the site of a pre-existing outdoor theatre, the Teatro del Licinium. Dominated in the plan by the rigid geometry of the circle and the straight line, from the semi-circular base of the steps to the final exedra, its design develops a sequence of architectural elements that from simple becomes increasingly complex, generating the phases of a path that is also spiritual. The cypresses surrounding the monument heighten the sense of pathos as one ascends.
